St. Emilion, France
You approach St. Emilion from Bordeaux through vast vineyards to what appears to be a very small village with a church on the top of a valley. What you don't realize until you have actually parked and start walking around is that St. Emilion is actually built into the side of the hill. As you walk down the hill to the square below you pass a number of French bistros where it is possible to enjoy the wonderful St. Emilion red paired with one of my favourite French dishes, Beef Bourguignon. It is only when you get to the bottom of the hill do you see what really brings people to the village, the cathedral built as a single room into the rock face. It was started over 500 years ago by a hermit named Emilion and has been enlarged over time into the world's largest monolithic cathedral.
