About Tom Green
With a passion for the winemaking process and the Niagara Region’s wine industry, Tom Green with Diamond Estates Wines & Spirits Ltd. continues to craft wines that are internationally recognized, making him one of the region’s best and brightest.
Tom’s interest in winemaking began at a very early age. Originally from South Africa, Tom developed a passion for the Niagara region and its budding wine industry. On weekend breaks from his university education, Tom would go to his parents’ 50 acre vineyard in Beamsville, Ontario and cultivate his knowledge of viticulture. Even today, Tom says that seeing fruit on the vine is one of his favorite parts of the winemaking process.
As Vice President, Winemaking & Winery Operations for Diamond Estates Wines & Spirits Ltd., Tom manages the winemaking process from the vineyard to the bottle for several wineries including The Dan Aykroyd Winery, Lakeview Cellars Estate Winery, EastDell Estates Winery and Birchwood Estate Wines. He places great emphasis on selecting grape varieties that are suited to the soils and micro-climate of the Niagara Region so that he and his team work with nature, not against it. Tom serves as the Chair of the Technical Committee for the Sustainable Winemaking Program of Ontario, striving to find a balance between innovative and traditional winemaking practices.
With Dan Aykroyd wines, Tom’s winemaking approach reinforces the intention of the brand – to bring consumers world-class wines that showcase and celebrate the terroir of the Niagara Region.
Tom is an honours graduate of the internationally recognized Cool Climate Oenology & Viticulture Institute (CCOVI) at Brock University. The Canadian Wine Awards, along with other prestigious international competitions, have awarded Tom Green with top honours for his extensive and varied wine portfolio. In fall 2007 he was promoted to Vice President, Winemaking & Winery Operations for Diamond Estates Wines & Spirits Ltd.
